Europe’s First Lithium Refinery: A Key Piece in Germany’s Economic Puzzle

Europe’s future is dependent on the availability of raw materials, particularly lithium, which is necessary for car batteries, wind turbines, and solar facilities. The United Nations considers it « a pillar for a fossil fuel-free economy. » Germany’s Advanced Metallurgical Group (AMG) hopes to begin producing lithium hydroxide this year, with plans to refine 20,000 tons annually in Bitterfeld, enough for half a million electric cars. The total is expected to increase to 100,000 tons annually within a few years. The raw material will initially come from AMG’s own mine in Brazil, but the company is investing hundreds of millions of euros to eventually source it from mines in Germany.

Dr. Heinz C. Schimmelbusch, the 78-year-old former director of Metallgesellschaft, is the man behind the project. Schimmelbusch, known as « Schibu » in the world of raw materials, wants to build a final monument to himself with this latest project. His refinery is being viewed as a key piece in Germany’s economic puzzle going forward. Schimmelbusch is investing in the project because he believes that reliable supplies of raw materials are currently one of the most important challenges facing the global economy.

The industrial park in Bitterfeld-Wolfen, just north of Leipzig, is where AGFA once developed the first functioning color film in the world. Today, sparks fly as workers wearing protective goggles cut through metal pipes. The new German industrial miracle is taking shape here, with Europe’s first lithium refinery. Schimmelbusch’s refinery is expected to be a major contributor to Germany’s future geopolitical independence, fighting climate change, and creating millions of jobs.

The availability of raw materials is a global challenge that affects everyone, from industry leaders to policymakers. The accelerating exploitation of metals, ores, and minerals is seen as inescapable for the salvation of the planet, clean energy, and the transportation revolution. The success of Germany’s lithium refinery project is crucial to the country’s future, and it is being viewed as a key piece in Germany’s economic puzzle. Schimmelbusch believes that action must be taken now, or we will run out of time.
